How to Appear Confident in an Interview

Take a new sheet of paper and write "reasons why I should get my dream job" in the center, then draw a bubble around it. Write out exactly what your dream job is. Then write down these arguments, scattering them over various connected bubbles. You want to get as many reasons on the page as possible. We're trying to create in you the belief that you are deserving. Read them and say to yourself, “Yes, I'm worth it!" and see an instant change in yourself with a new sense of confidence.

Regrettably, our lack of self-confidence destroys the most sensitive times in life, such as while looking for a job! Studies reveal that interviewers make conclusions about applicants in as little as four minutes after meeting them on how you talk, handle yourself, and welcome the interviewer. The good news is that self-confidence can both be earned and lost. Here is how:

Be Present in the Present
John, a banker who aced his recent interview, gave an example of his approach. He focused on coming prepared, remaining present and involved in the process, and what he needed to say about himself as the primary keys to nailing confidence in an interview. He insisted on connecting with your interviewer by giving valuable responses to questions and showing a ready interest in what they have to say. The more concentrated you are on your goal, the less room fear, anxiousness, and self-doubt will have, leaving you with those perfect levels of energy and determination.

The Positive Approach
Focus on the positive experiences to overcome the unfavorable ones. We tend to focus on the terrible things that happen to us. Being laughed at for making a mistake, being severely rejected by someone you admire, or being teased for things, all of them matter. Despite loads of happy experiences, it only takes one or two nasty remarks for someone to lose it all. According to Dr Mark's example, who successfully landed a job at his dream hospital by following this guideline, people won't remember what you said at the end of the day. So, focus more on yourself and be confident.

Cover up your Insecurities & Mediate
Even when you don't feel confident, standing confidently alters your brain, making you feel more secure. For example, you were under constant pressure from inside on how your interview will turn out, yet you still managed to smile and look confident. Research suggests that shifting your body postures affects how others see you and even changes your body chemistry. Like sitting confidently before an interview or before any other event will significantly improve how you feel and seem to others and improve your chances of success. As an example, let's do a relaxing exercise. Take five minutes to calm your mind and focus on your breath. Inhaling for four counts, holding your breath for a few seconds, and then breathing for four counts. This will help you focus, so your confidence shines through in the interview.

Keep your notes with you in virtual interviews.
If your interview is online, ensure you are prepared for success in the minutes before logging on. For example, test your camera and lighting, grab a notepad and a glass of water and most importantly, keep a printout of your best accomplishments near you where you can quickly view them.

Be the Master of your Luck
As you advance in your job, you will naturally become more confident while interviewing. Experience and confidence generally go hand in hand.
Good resources will give you all the confidence you need. If you are new to your field or lack the experience required to feel confident for the vacancy you are applying for, in that case, an accountant Harry, for example, sought assistance from appropriate books, the internet, training classes, and a mentor. This left him with desired confidence levels that he needed in his interview.

The Power of Memory
Take another example of a confidence-boosting activity; cover your eyes and feel a moment when you made a solid and confident handshake. Consider the eyes and face of a kind and sympathetic person you know or have who has previously interviewed you. Hear their words of comfort and reassurance. Feel the vibe of a previously happy and successful interview. Take notes of your posture, breathing patterns, and heart rate. Rehearse and live through this interview in your thoughts.

When completed entirely, this activity will boost your confidence for your forthcoming interview by relating it to extraordinary and successful situations in your life. You will no longer be stepping into a new and maybe frightening situation, but rather one you have already successfully passed in your mind.

Body Posture

You may automatically change your body for confidence. Lucy asked herself, how would she sit if she was genuinely interested in what her interviewer was saying? This drastically improved her self-confidence. You'll be amazed at how frequently you need to re-adjust your body and how much more secure you will feel afterwards.

Dress up & Be Active
Keeping in shape and wearing smartly for interviews are both beneficial strategies. A management strategist, David, suggested them as they boosted his self-esteem, and regular exercise gave him more energy and helped him feel better about himself.

The Confidence Pillar
A comfortable, firm handshake, direct eye contact, decent posture, calm yet energetic communication style, and a genuine smile can be advantageous over other candidates. If Peter has a shaky hand and cannot look straight into the eyes of his interviewer while talking, his confidence levels have dropped.

Take it easy!
While job interviews are crucial, remember that they are simply a one-to-one chat. Reassure yourself that on the other side of the desk is a person, and that person is a breathing human being with his or her concerns and worries as well. So, take a deep breath, brush your hair, grab pen and paper, smile... and enter!
