Task-Oriented Resume versus Achievement-Oriented Resume - What's the big deal?

8/20/2021

The big deal between the task-oriented resume and the achievement-oriented resume is their difference in stealing the eyes of the hiring managers or employers.  How they will immediately pick up your resume and call you for an interview. Perhaps, which approach is better to use, how you can successfully win an interview using it, and get the job?
So, what's the difference between a task-oriented resume and an achievement-oriented resume?

The task-oriented resume shows your experiences with just mere descriptions of your everyday work. These are unclear tasks with no definite results of your contribution to the company, or these are called accomplishments. Below are some examples of the task-oriented descriptions that can be considered to be revised:

"Encoded data using electronic filing system."
"Provided training to 20 employees."
"Developed a system to assist the manager."

On the other hand, the achievement-oriented resume will demonstrate your accomplishments instead of statements that would not help the reader assess your qualifications.

Examples of these are:

"Delivered customer service training to 25 employees to achieve 100% client satisfaction rate."
"Assessed financial reports to identify discrepancies and resolve issues."
"Facilitated the general manager in overseeing the operation, which led to promotion to general manager 2."

Why should you create an achievement-oriented resume instead of a task-oriented resume?

You need to create an achievement-oriented resume so you will be able to communicate with your readers, and they are the employers. This is another technique that you can use to further explain your previous or present job, along with your accomplishments.

How to transform a task-oriented resume into an achievement-oriented Resume?

To do this, thoroughly check your resume, eliminate those descriptions that are not impactful, add the right action verbs, and use the STAR approach to develop your routine responsibilities into achievements. Then, transform each sentence by describing your responsibilities, how you did it, and lastly, presenting the results.

Let us try to transform the task-oriented descriptions above into achievement-oriented. See below results:

"Encoded data using electronic filing system to generate accurate results."
"Provided training to 20 employees to guide them in achieving their sales goals."
"Developed a system to assist the manager in properly spearheading the operations."

Which is better? The task-oriented resume or the achievement-oriented Resume?

As you can see, after transforming the task-oriented statements above, the newly worded achievement-oriented statements are now better and more readable. If an employer is going to read it, definitely there is a greater chance of getting an interview.

Get more job opportunities through an effective achievement-oriented resume.

Preparing and making a resume that should be more effective is sometimes challenging especially if you are clueless about starting it. When you need help in updating or creating your resume, better ask for a resume writer's assistance. They would advise an achievement-oriented resume so you can win the employer's attention and land your dream job
