Tattoos in the workplace: Are tattoos a hindrance to whether you will get the job?

People think differently about having tattoos; some find it creative or as an art, while others think it’s too scary! For those who do not want any stain on their skin, getting tattoos will not be an option. The same in a workplace; it depends if tattoos are acceptable.
Some companies wouldn’t mind hiring employees with tattoos for as long as they are qualified and fit for the job. However, in some instances having tattoos matters. The same with the story of Sylvain Helaine, 35, a kindergarten teacher who is covered with tattoos on his whole body. Helaine has been teaching for years, but things turned around when the school suddenly received a complaint from a child. This child was having nightmares after seeing the teacher, which resulted in stopping Sylvain from teaching children from kindergarten.

It is clear that the teacher experiences racism for being barred from teaching kindergarten. As he mentioned in an article, he loves his job, and he was sad about the decision. But those who would assess the situation, certainly other employers or workplaces, are not going to allow this. Since Sylvain’s profession is teaching, the expectations of the people surrounding his workplace are for him to be a role model for their students, particularly the little children.

Do having tattoos would affect your goal to get your dream job?

Having tattoos should not be a hindrance in getting a job because the important thing that an employer must look for is the knowledge, skills, and abilities of an applicant. The person’s appearance could only be an additional qualification that has to be on the list and probably should not be a priority.

Are there any jobs where tattoos are not allowed?

We cannot stop people from getting tattoos, so it is not right to totally don’t allow it at work. There are just some companies or professions that would not accept visible tattoos. You need to hide or cover them up so it won’t create any issues for other people that find tattoos disturbing. For example, police officers; other citizens think that law enforcement officers wearing tattoos are still somehow associated with people breaking the law. As you would see in movies or news, people with tattoos play the role of villains or criminals, creating bad impressions on the audience.

Each of us has a different perception when it comes to having a tattoo. We should think twice before deciding to get our bodies punctured with ink. You must be ready to get criticism and face the consequences that would follow. It is better to consider the qualifications and requirements of the job you are planning to pursue to know if getting tattoos would be a hindrance. Tattoos should not deter your will to get into the workplace you are dreaming of. But the impression that having tattoos already created would not be changed anymore. Therefore, you need to deal with it and get used to it.
