The Anatomy of a Modern Resume

It is a common scenario to conclude that the modern job market is difficult and competitive, amid a global pandemic. There are thousands, if not hundreds, of work applicants competing for the same job vacancy at a  company; therefore, every job applicant's primary target is to stand out among the rest.

But do you set yourself apart from a pool of job applicants using a dull, repetitive, and outdated resume? You won't until you flip your resume on its head and turn it into something that people would be interested to read.
As a consequence, if you've had a harder time receiving feedback on your work applications than normal, a resume makeover may be in order.

Having said that here are the basic parts of a modern resume:

  1. Format and Layout:
Resumes are more generally displayed on computer screens rather than on paper in this digital era. As a result, choose the best format and layout that will represent your industry and your personality. This includes font style for reading on laptops or tablets. Calibri, Verdana, and Tahoma are all preferred sans serif fonts. If you are still using  Times New Roman for handwritten resumes, your resume may look old and dull.

Tip: There are three resume formats that you need to know before writing your resume, namely chronological, functional, combination.

  1. Winning career summary:
Refrain from using an objective statement, rather start with a professional profile that describes the value you can bring to the table to the hiring manager. Mention your core skills in 4 or 5 sentences depending on your targeted company’s requirements and qualifications. To identify yourself as a professional, utilize strong adjectives and action verbs.

Tip: Don't recycle job descriptions from your resume or cover letter that the recruiter can see anywhere.

  1. Skills sections:
Also called “Areas of Expertise”, “Core Competencies”, or “Key Strengths”, this section is comprised of industry-specific keywords usually following the summary section of your resume. These keywords are interchangeable and can be edited should you need to make changes going forward.  Keywords have also been used throughout
the remainder of the document.

Tip: Do not include skills that are not related to your target job. Your “strong web development skills” won’t exactly do anything if you’re applying for a managerial position in a fine dining restaurant. Include relevant skills that will prove valuable.

  1. Strong work experience section:
  2. Convey your progressive experience in your experience section, make sure to highlight the company’s name and location, especially if it is a prestigious company, along with a brief description as necessary.

Specify your job position/title and the inclusive years that you spent within the company. Provide recruiters with a resume wherein they can easily identify the details they need to know. Using bullet points can help you do this, with a focus on the outcomes of past job descriptions to show a future boss how good you are at what you do. Give examples and figures thus being succinct.

    1. Additional information:
This section depends on the position you are applying for. Let’s say you've been involved with any social or academic organizations. Perhaps, you have made significant contributions to your community, you may include them here. Once again, even if you're not sure whether they are relevant or not, consider hiring a professional that will determine that for you. They may or may not be included in the resume depending on their relevance to the position you wish to have.

Tip: The education section may be placed at the top of the resume if you are a recent graduate or if it is stronger than your experience. On the other hand, if you are already a seasoned professional and your experience in your chosen field is more than 10 years, consider putting it below the document. This also applies to your professional development and credentials.
