You will never know when you will have an impromptu conversation, either with a former client or colleague, asking you what your new company does. This is an excellent opportunity to promote your business.

But before you gather your thoughts, (buzzer on). Times up!!! And they are gone.

This is one of many situations that you could have prepared the so-called “elevator pitch”.

But what exactly is an elevator pitch?

Also known as an elevator speech or elevator statement, it is a short, persuasive speech used to highlight your company’s benefits and spark the interest of the person you are talking to.

From the name itself, it should last for only 6 to 10 seconds, like you are riding an elevator. You can also use it to introduce a project, service, or product. It should be concise, informative and should leave a lasting impression by emphasizing the things that set you or your company apart, thus making them remember you and your company.

Now you are asking when to use this elevator pitch?

Many people think an elevator pitch  is only effective for a salesperson to sell their products and services. However, this is also useful for business owners to introduce their company to potential clients.

If you are an employee, you can use this to present a practical insight to your boss; likewise, if you are playing a leadership role, you can use this to introduce an initiative that you are currently developing, which will be implemented later on.

So, how to create an effective elevator pitch?

We know that you will ask this question, so we compile the five easy steps to conceptualize, write, and implement the most effective elevator pitch that works for you. Let us begin.

1.Identify your goal

What do you want to convey? Evaluate yourself and your company and think carefully about what you wish to communicate; what is this all about?; What is your objective?

Do you want to introduce your company to potential clients? Or a new idea to streamline the operations within the company? Or explain what you do for a living? Whatever your objective is, remember that you’ll need to change your method based on your goal.

2.Explain what you do

You may begin your pitch by defining what your company does. Emphasize the benefits and solutions, along with the process to help people. Remember that you have to show value.

Keep it straight and strong for them to remember you, thus leaving them an impression that will truly last. For example:

“My company helps people land their dream jobs - this is our mission. Our commitment is to equip our clients with the necessary career tools, supporting them to confidently face the challenges of today's modern job search, resulting in a success rate of 97%.”

3.Engage with a question

After you communicate your value, you have to ask how to engage your audience. Open-ended questions will go hand-in-hand to ensure their involvement with the conversation.

Keep it succinct and mind-blowing to spark their interest in you. For example:

So, how does your company ensure its interview success?

4.Put it all together

Now that you know how to prepare your elevator pitch let us conceptualize and write it down. You may have different versions. Don’t worry, it is normal. After you identify what version that will work best for you, read it aloud and observe yourself.

If you think you have to eliminate or add something, then do. You might want to consider asking someone for their thoughts. After all, two heads are better than one.

Just remember that it must be snappy and compelling, brief and convincing. For example:

“My company helps people land their dream jobs - this is our mission. Our commitment is to equip our clients with the necessary career tools, supporting them to confidently face the challenges of today's modern job search, resulting in a success rate of 97%.

Unlike any other resume writing companies, we provide personalized service to ensure that we understand and write our resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles, which are tailor-made specifically to our client's needs, powered with industry-specific keywords and accomplishment-driven language.

So, how does your company ensure its interview success?”

5.Practice toward perfection

After you picked the best pitch for you, practice how you will say it and present yourself in front of your audience.

Always remember not to speak too fast, add pause as necessary and most importantly, act natural. It is not like you are in school for a graded recitation. Make your pitch conversational and exciting.

Do not make it sound too salesly.. Also, take note of your eye contact and body language; you may practice in front of your friends or colleague, take their comments to improve. Through this, you can make a smooth conversation while preventing the aggressiveness of your approach.
