Career Changers: How to Get the Job Without the Experience?

The first thing that you would be asking yourself in a moment that you want to change your career is, how do I get the job if I don’t have the experience? In this case, how are you going to update your resume to impress employers and will give you a chance to step into their doors?

As a career changer, you need to assess yourself on what industry you are up to for you to know where to start. After choosing the new career path to begin again, it is time to revamp your resume.

5 Essential Tips in Getting the Job without the Experience

1. Take Time to Learn About the Industry

To have at least a 90% chance to be hired in an industry that you do not have a background in, take time to learn about the organization or industry where you want to join. You may also review the qualifications required for the job so you can strategize what to include on your resume.

2. Use the Proper Resume Format

Gear your resume to the job position you are eyeing for, using the right and proper format. Career changers often use functional to better highlight skills instead of work history. You need to downplay your work history since it is going to be a different industry you are going to.

A functional resume would highlight transferable skills. Some professional writers use different techniques to do this. However, the usual way to showcasing your knowledge and abilities is by summarizing your relevant experiences. Evaluate what you had on your previous resume regarding your work experience and then place the skills you think match the job requirement in skill-set bullets.

3. Choose the Right Keywords and Transferable Skills

By choosing the right keywords and transferable skills, you are more likely to catch the attention of employers. As a strategy, check and review job postings to see how you can incorporate keywords and transferable skills to your resume.

An example of this is a company that is looking for an operations manager. The operations manager should know how to handle teams and maintain the productivity of the operations. He or she should know how to oversee the budget, identify problems, or comply with policies and procedures. These are the main keywords that you should include on your resume, the same with skills. Just ensure that the descriptions, keywords, or transferable skills that you will incorporate on your resume are not copied and pasted.

4. Edit your Profile

Demonstrate how you could be a valuable asset to the company despite having no direct experience through your profile. Employers or hiring managers would look first at the header of your resume, and they would immediately see your profile. As a hiring manager, they must find the skills and knowledge of an applicant that fits the job. Before they get them into an interview, they should already know about the applicants’ qualifications, key skills, and experiences.

5. Prepare Yourself for the Anticipated Interview

Every applicant must expect that in each resume sent, a potential interview might come next. Be prepared for any possible questions that the hiring manager may ask. Practice yourself in a mirror. Make sure that you already have concrete answers. You should know how to answer why you want to change your career.

Changing careers isn’t easy because of many things that you need to get through again. If you think that you are having a hard time on this and still want to push through in changing your career path, then do not hesitate to approach a professional writer or a career coach to help you decide on the right career path.
