The #1 Myth About What Resumes Should Look Like

When you search for resume writing best practices on the internet, you find various articles. There is a wealth of information available online on how to write a resume, along with tips, dos, and don’ts, common resume mistakes, etc. but many of those posts reinforce misconceptions about resume writing.. As a result, despite having exceptional credentials, many applicants are unable to obtain employment.
In my 20+ years of experience in resume writing and career coaching arena, I’ve been asked this question a million times and many job applicants are still believing in this myth:

A flawless and effective resume must be one page long, with a straightforward objective, and has a long list of both hard and soft skills

When you visualize it, you will come up with this kind of resume: <See the image above>

However, contrary to common belief, certain characteristics do not always make for a perfect resume. Let us discuss them one by one.

Myth: Resumes should be one page long

Truth: Creating a resume of the most suitable length (and format) will involve an array of skills that most people don't have. A one-page resume may look too "entry-level".  But a properly designed, well-written two-page or three-page resume could be far better.  Recruiters will appreciate an effective two- or three-page! Times have changed. Longer resumes are acceptable today.

Myth: Resumes should have an objective

Truth: Objectives aren’t used anymore because they don’t speak to the needs of the employer but rather to the needs of the applicants..  The wording of an objective usually sounds like a request on your part rather than a proposal of value offered.  This message should be handled within the cover letter, and then subtly written into the summary section.

Myth: Resumes should have a long list of both hard and soft skills

Truth: Skills are an important part of the resume. It is presented in a million and one different ways but it is more than just skills. They are your strong points, your foundation - your CORE! To be effective they should be industry-specific and operations-oriented. This section also acts as a keyword-rich area that enables your resume to be quickly found by HR technology on the internet, known as the ATS. Keep in mind that your ultimate success in being selected and ranked will be determined by how effectively you have used keywords in your resume.

Resume writing has evolved in many ways, including the layout, format, and content presentation. Before writing your resume, it is important to ask the following questions first:

What kind of jobs are you looking for? Who is it that you are submitting your resume to? Focus on the qualities needed for the position you're applying for after you've answered these questions. This is one of the resume tips that most job seekers overlook. Conduct an extensive investigation into the job and its requirements. Try to find out if you'd be a good candidate for their organization. After that, tailor a resume by aligning your experience and skills.
